Is there any easy way to get the silk touch enchantment?

  • #1 Apr 14, 2015

I have an underground base and am trying to get grass blocks down there.

I have build a dirt stair case all the way down which is working but it's taking absolutely ages.

I've tried enchanting shovel after shovel but I never get the silk touch enchantment.

Is there a way I can increase the chances of getting silk touch on my shovel?

    I'm on xbox one version.

The only other option would be to get a Silk Touch book, either found in a chest (dungeon etc), by trading with a librarian (white coat) villager, or fishing. But none of them are guaranteed or easy. You're probably better off persevering with the enchanting.

Enchant multiple items at once. Get like 36-39 levels. Bring some books, a bow, a pick, a sword, etc, and just don't waste a shovel. The table resets every time you enchant something.

Steps to get ANY specific enchantment(1.8 only):

    1. Check level 30 enchantment on diamond pick (if silk touch, DO IT)
    2. If not desired enchant, do a level 1(lowest) enchant on a book
    3. Check enchantment on level 30 on pick again.
    4. Repatt process until you see silk touch on your pick.

    Thanks.

What enchantment level do you need to be and when selecting an enchantment and what level enchantment do I need to select?

I get 3 choices of enchantment, each with a number by them but i'm not sure which number would be more likely to get silk touch.

With 1.8 enchanting, it would be foolish not to enchant everything at level 30.

    1.7, not so much.

Look at the third enchantment when looking for Silk Touch. The enchant that costs 3 levels and 3 lapis.

When you don't see silk touch, do the minimum enchantment on a book. Top enchantment will use 1 level and 1 lapis.

I'm on console. There doesn't seem to be a way to check the enchantment before applying it. It seems to be random

Oh...no idea you were on console. Sorry for wasting your time. Console....there is no great way besides just grinding away. Look up max levels needed for Silk Touch.

    Thanks for the replies.

Sorry. Didn't realise this was the wrong forum. Just saw the survival mode forum and assumed it was for all formats.

I'll check into the auto fish farm. Although as console is a bit behind PC I'm not sure if I can catch anything other than fish from fishing.

I started on XBox. The first day I tried PC was the last day I turned on my XBox. Don't even know where that thing is.

To be fair the difference between xbox 360 and PC version is massive but the difference between xbox one and PC is a lot smaller.

The xbox one version(and ps4) may not be as up to date as the PC version but it still a very enjoyable game

Build a sugarcane farm. Build an infinite villager breeder. Discard unwanted villagers and keep breeding until you get a bunch of librarians. Sell them paper (from the sugarcane farm) to unlock their trades. Each librarian will sell 3 different enchanted books. Keep breeding and discarding unsatisfactory villagers until you get one that sells Silk Touch. Silk Touch being technically only a level 1 enchantment, buying a book of it from a librarian (once you find one that sells it) tends to be a very reasonable deal.

While going through the villagers, don't forget to check the blacksmiths. The toolsmith subtype sells enchanted iron shovels, sometimes those have silk touch on them. If not, their enchanted diamond picks might as well.

Both of these villager routes to a book will take quite some time and a lot of investment in time, labor, and materials to get your first silk touch book or shovel/pick. But once you DO get one....you can get hundreds or thousands more where that came from, on demand whenever you want more. While you're at it, take some of those brown-robed villagers and make an autofarm for carrots and/or potatoes, then sell those to farmer-subtype villagers for emeralds with which to buy tools and/or books from the other villagers.

    Infinite village breeder?

Now that's something I would like to do but not just for the enchantment. It would be nice to build a village on the surface by the entrance to my base and have it populated with villagers.

Is there any good websites with full details on how to do this?

This is the video tutorial I used as inspiration for the design I use.

Instead of a minimal number of doors in the pit below, I put a whole bunch of doors around a slightly wider skylight, to have a whole underground village. Instead of bringing the resulting babies up and away with a water ladder, I have them drop down a water drop into the aforementioned underground village. I use them for trading, and have an underground iron golem grinder system integrated with the trading area so the large number of villagers kept in one place for trading also keep the underground village population high enough to spawn golems in the grinder.

Free iron (although nowhere near as much as a more complex grinder like the Iron Titan etc.), which can be sold to the blacksmiths for emeralds, which can be paid to the blacksmiths to buy enchanted gear, or to the librarians for enchanted books. Use some spare browncoats to autofarm you carrots and potatoes, and you'll have more emeralds than you can spend.
    Carrot/potato autofarm design I use:

The Iron Titan I mentioned, which you can build in your spawn chunk and staff with villagers not useful for the autofarms and which don't have good enough deals to keep around for trading:
