How To Get Blood Out Of Silk

Silk pillowcases have been big news in the beauty world for a while now, with many products claiming to offer skin and hair benefits.

The reason? Put simply, silk is said to be kinder to your complexion than cotton. Firstly, it's less absorbent than other materials, meaning there's a higher chance your skin will stay hydrated overnight.

As well as this, silk is said to cause less friction, which may be gentler on your complexion night after night.

Silk pillowcases are also said to be beneficial for your hair for similar reasons: your hair is less likely to dry out and you may end up with a smoother finish first thing.

Explaining why she uses a silk pillowcase every night, Good Housekeeping's beauty director, Eve Cameron, told us: "I've slept on one for years (washing it obviously) for its claimed anti-ageing benefits.

"Also, cotton wicks more moisture from skin and hair than silk does, and I swear I notice a difference when I don't sleep on silk."

What's the best silk pillowcase?

With so many silk pillowcases now on offer, it can be hard working out which one is best to invest in. So, we asked Eve to reveal the silk pillowcases she rates the most...

Our beauty director loves the Gingerlily Beauty Box Mulberry Silk Pillowcase which promises to reduce friction and moisture loss, as well as prevent hair from becoming dry and brittle.

The Gingerlily's pillowcase's product description claims: "Because it contains the same naturally occurring proteins as hair, sleeping on our luxury bed linen will reduce friction and moisture loss, preventing hair from becoming dry and brittle; so you wake up with healthy, sleek and shiny hair."

It continues: "Also hypoallergenic and breathable, it works to regulate the body's temperature so that you sleep soundly all night long."

Eve also loves the Iluminage's Skin Rejuvenating Pillowcase which isn't silk but feels like it.

"I also like Illuminage, which feels like silk (it's not!) and is impregnated with copper," Eve told us.

The Illuminage silk pillowcase's product description claims: "With a silky soft feel for a comfortable night's sleep, the innovative pillowcase has been clinically proven to visibly reduce the appearance of ageing, including fine lines and crow's feet, in as little as four weeks."

It continues: "Pillowcase fibres are infused with copper oxide, an essential mineral to allow you to fight wrinkles with your eyes closed. When in contact with skin, copper ions are transferred into the moisture space between the fabric and skin to promote natural cell renewal."
